Merry Christmas 2013 - Better Late Than Never!

I began this post in Texas, enjoying the relative warmth of a southern climate while celebrating Christmas with our daughter and her children. Then the seemingly ever-present technological complications occurred and the post was never completed.

Now New Year's has past, I have two more posts in draft form, and I decided to send this one anyway. Though I no longer make specific resolutions, I do set some goals for myself for the new year. (Another post entirely.) Suffice it to say, staying in touch with the community of writers, photographers and friends is important to me, and holidays seem to bring everyone together again.

So here is my Christmas post, and I hope you had as joyous a holiday as we did.

The drive to my daughter's, in Texas, is a grueling one. We were not looking forward to the 21+ hours on the car! but we were gladly leaving behind the most current winter weather in Michigan! Ice and snow and cold...ENOUGH! (Another post to come about Mother Nature and the gift that also keeps on giving!)

When we started out the ice had stopped, but the snow had started. It was slow going until we rounded the Southern end of Lake Michigan and headed out out of Chicago. Then all signs of Mother Nature's temper tantrum seemed to magically disappear and it was smooth sailing from there!

Crossing the Mississippi River in bright sunshine and 45 degree temperatures lifted our spirits as we continued south, enjoying the changing landscapes as well as the occasional rest stop for coffee.

Two nights on the road and we arrived in time for lunch on Christmas Eve. Time for family and the celebration of the miracle that happened so long ago, and keeps giving the gift every day.

100 Blessings

It's funny how a project takes on a life of its own. I started out making a list of things I'd like to take pictures of - piles of M&M's, rocks on the beach, license plates hanging on an old garage door. Then I decided it would be interesting to find 100 items about "me," celebrating my 100th post with items about me/my life/etc. This way I could tie my compulsion to blog in to my theme. So, I started THAT list. And when I was done I decided all the things I was collecting, ideas as well as items, were actually blessings. Things about my life that make me who I am and allow me to keep striving to be the best I can be at what I do. Each activity isn't necessarily a blessing, it's my ability to do the things I love to do, and be with the people I love to be with. Restoration in the Works!

The Ammi Wright House. Built 1888. Our town has some pretty remarkable older homes and businesses. Many have already been restored and are residences and/or businesses. We went to a meeting the other night which focused on how to go about restoring a beautiful old lumber Barron's home - the Ammi Wright house, just off the main street. It has been empty for a great many years and needs a lot of work to bring it back to life. But this group of people can do it. The building itself is already purchased as part of an agreement with the Gratiot Area Historical Society. Located in a nearby town, they have purchased it and Alma will be part of this system. We are now forming committees for all the areas which need to be addressed, including historical research, fundraising, publicity, etc. Lots of work, and lots of interest.
