Splash-In, With an "Old" Look

We spent a wonderful summer day at a splash-in, an event where those pilots who love float planes, and amphibian aircraft, get together to compete in contests, and perform fly-bys, entertaining the crowds. People camp at the State park for the weekend, or drive up for the day. We were in the last category.I wanted to use my wide-angle lens today, exclusively. It's not a super wide-angle, but it does afford a wider view than a standard lens would offer. My husband shot with the telephoto, and I'll share some of those photos another time. I also decided to try some black and white photos, which helped establish an old-time feel to the event. The clouds and sky also lent themselves to adding a bit of drama to the shots.
Some pilots were able to tie their planes to the shore line, and others had to tie out in deeper water. Time to leave? Walk out and board the plane!
What do you think of the black and white? I have a setting in the camera which sets monochrome, which I used today, and I think I'll also try some Photoshop conversions. Does anyone else have experience with any difference in results between in-camera and in-computer conversions?

I've used it a few times but my photography instructor always said to shoot in color and do the conversion so you have the option of picking which you like.

great shots

I've never shot in black and white so can't comment at all on the difference between that and the computer conversion but I especially love what the black and white has done to the skies in these! I have an urge just to zoom into those delicious clouds... And in the bottom one the plane is in such relief, it's gorgeous.

Looks like a great day out! :)

oh, cool! i just saw some really fabulous black and white framed photos on display at a local coffee shot. they were all shots taken at a small airport nearby. they were amazing. you would have loved them!

i'm going to try to find out who it was and get the name and see if they have a web site. then i will share it with you.

these are beautiful! i love black and white.

i have not really compared using the black and white setting on the camera to converting it in photoshop. i'll have to see what i get—now i'm intrigued. someone told me once that you will never get the same results with digital black and white that you can with film. is that true?
These are great! I have heard you get better results with turning the photos to B&W after shooting. I don't have any experience with it though. Thanks for your sweet comments on my blog the other day. I appreciate the feedback:)

I love the moody and intense look of the skies in these photos. I've used black and white film and altered color pix in Photoshop, but I've never shot with just black and white settings on the camera. I like the option of keeping the color or switching to b&w.
Love your black and white!!! Your compositions are wonderful as always, but the mood you captured is brilliant. It zaps me back to my childhood. The sky is stunning.
btw - I think your in-camera has achieved so much more depth of value than what I have found in my conversions... but there again, my photos weren't as scrumptious.

100 Blessings

It's funny how a project takes on a life of its own. I started out making a list of things I'd like to take pictures of - piles of M&M's, rocks on the beach, license plates hanging on an old garage door. Then I decided it would be interesting to find 100 items about "me," celebrating my 100th post with items about me/my life/etc. This way I could tie my compulsion to blog in to my theme. So, I started THAT list. And when I was done I decided all the things I was collecting, ideas as well as items, were actually blessings. Things about my life that make me who I am and allow me to keep striving to be the best I can be at what I do. Each activity isn't necessarily a blessing, it's my ability to do the things I love to do, and be with the people I love to be with. This became an introspective activity, and that's probably where I am in my life right now. If the shoe fits..., so to speak. So, welcome to my 100th Post ! Without everyone I've met thr

Restoration in the Works!

The Ammi Wright House.  Built 1888.         Our town has some pretty remarkable older homes and businesses.  Many have already been restored and are residences and/or businesses.   We went to a meeting the other night which focused on how to go about restoring a beautiful old lumber Barron's home - the Ammi Wright house, just off the main street. It has been empty for a great many years and needs a lot of work to bring it back to life.  But this group of people can do it.   The building itself is already purchased as part of an agreement with the Gratiot Area Historical Society.  Located in a nearby town, they have purchased it and Alma will be part of this system.  We are now forming committees for all the areas which need to be addressed, including historical research, fundraising, publicity, etc.  Lots of work, and lots of interest.  There is a steering committee in place, and we all signed up for an area we feel comfortable helping with.  Mine is research, which is no surpris
