Go for Humor

Sometimes I think we take our photography too seriously. There are images which we need to make for the sheer fun of it, don't you think? The quality may not be the best, the lighting might be poor, the focus slightly off, the color may need more correction than you want to mess with - but the photo is just plain cute. It's a memory of a place, or an experience, or a time...and it's a treasure. Do you have photos like that? If so, are they shoved in a box, or framed to enjoy? Or shared with others...like a good laugh and a warm smile?

This is my little "friend" from Yellowstone National Park last summer. There was a colony of ground squirrels, actually, all around a lovely river where we were photographing fly fishermen on a warm summer's day. You actually had to watch where you walked, or you could stumble in one of their holes. But they were also the most comical little creatures and I eventually turned from the river and just started watching the holes. Up one would pop. Run to another hole. Dive in. Pop up. Look at me. Stare, even! And this one just had to tell me how he felt about my presence in his domain. Fabulous!

To be on the safe side, I gave them wide berth. I used my 200mm 2.8 lens on my Canon body....and with image stabilization I was able to get some pretty decent shots.

Have fun. There's more to photography than capturing stellar images every single time!

I completely agree Sandy! Many of my favourite shots of people and places are not in any way "good" photographs but they are the triggers for VERY good memories! I LOVE beautiful, artistic photography (and aspire to create t myself one day) but to me, as a complete happy snapper with only a small compact camera to my name, that remains the primary reason for taking photographs - capturing moments as they are, flaws & all.

Love your little fellow!

That is hilarious! Look at those teeth. OH, my. I can just hear his squeaky-little-too-fast voice, fussing at you for disturbing him.

100 Blessings

It's funny how a project takes on a life of its own. I started out making a list of things I'd like to take pictures of - piles of M&M's, rocks on the beach, license plates hanging on an old garage door. Then I decided it would be interesting to find 100 items about "me," celebrating my 100th post with items about me/my life/etc. This way I could tie my compulsion to blog in to my theme. So, I started THAT list. And when I was done I decided all the things I was collecting, ideas as well as items, were actually blessings. Things about my life that make me who I am and allow me to keep striving to be the best I can be at what I do. Each activity isn't necessarily a blessing, it's my ability to do the things I love to do, and be with the people I love to be with. This became an introspective activity, and that's probably where I am in my life right now. If the shoe fits..., so to speak. So, welcome to my 100th Post ! Without everyone I've met thr

Restoration in the Works!

The Ammi Wright House.  Built 1888.         Our town has some pretty remarkable older homes and businesses.  Many have already been restored and are residences and/or businesses.   We went to a meeting the other night which focused on how to go about restoring a beautiful old lumber Barron's home - the Ammi Wright house, just off the main street. It has been empty for a great many years and needs a lot of work to bring it back to life.  But this group of people can do it.   The building itself is already purchased as part of an agreement with the Gratiot Area Historical Society.  Located in a nearby town, they have purchased it and Alma will be part of this system.  We are now forming committees for all the areas which need to be addressed, including historical research, fundraising, publicity, etc.  Lots of work, and lots of interest.  There is a steering committee in place, and we all signed up for an area we feel comfortable helping with.  Mine is research, which is no surpris
